Reserve ahoraThe fluvial system of Canton of Sarapiqui, corresponds to the Subvertiente Norte of the Caribbean slope; which belongs to the basins of the Sarapiquí, Chirripó and Cureña rivers.
The fluvial system of the Canton of Sarapiquí, corresponds to its northern slope of the Caribbean slope; which belongs to the basins of the Sarapiquí, Chirripó and Cureña rivers. The first is drained by the Sarapiquí River, which is joined by the Pozo Azul, San Ramón, Tirimbina, Bijagual, Peje rivers and their tributary Mojón, as well as the Volcán, Puerto Viejo rivers, the latter born from the union of rivers Molejón and Sardinal, and receives the Guácimo, Sardinal and San Rafael rivers; as well as the Sucio River to which the San José and General rivers are joined; Like the Toro River and its Fourth tributary, the María River is also located in the area. These water courses, except the rivers Sarapiquí, Sardinal, Patria, General, Toro and Cuarto are born in the Canton, on the slope of the Central volcanic sierra; which present a course from south to north and from southwest to northeast, until reaching the San Juan River.
The Volcán, General and San Juan rivers are limits, the first two with the district of Vara Blanca del Cantón Heredia and the other with the Republic of Nicaragua. The Caño Negro, Astillero and Estero Grande lagoons are located in the area. The Chirripó river basin is drained by the river of the same name, which originates in the Canton, at the confluence of the General and Sucio rivers, presents a course from south to north until it joins the Colorado River, likewise it is the limit with the Pococí Canton of the province of Limón. In this basin is the Garza lagoon. Finally, the Cureña river basin is irrigated by the river of the same name, and the Cureñita, Tamborcito, Copalchi; which are born in the region, they present a course from southwest to northeast, until they converge in the San Juan river; the latter is limited to the Republic of Nicaragua. The Copalchi, Tambor, Maquenque, Remolino Grande and Las Gemelas lagoons are located in this basin.
